Let’s get honest with each other, ok?
~ About a year ago I decided to make the switch from store bought deodorants to homemade all natural deodorant. Why? I’ve always had issues with finding the right deodorants that kept me smelling fresh and kept me dry. I literally tried all types of Female antiperspirants and deodorants: Secret, Dove, Suave, Degree and even men’s Old Spice. Nothing worked for me. One day, a friend of mine introduced me to this homemade recipe she used and I decided it was worth a shot, since nothing else was working.
I read up on the previous deodorants I used and the benefits of using homemade all natural deodorants and I was astonished at my findings. Did you know that many antiperspirants contain Aluminum based compounds to prevent sweating? This means those compounds are blocking your sweat glands to stop the flow of sweat onto the skins surface. With continued use, and being so close to the breast, these aluminum compounds may be absorbed by the skin and have bad hormonal effects. I found on Cancer.gov that because the hormone estrogen can produce breast cancer cells, some scientists suggest that these antiperspirants can cause the development of breast cancer.
Uhmm, that’s scary right? Well, I didn’t want to take that chance for myself, so I decided to make a change and I’m so so glad I did. This hits home even more now, because recently my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She’s the sweetest, strongest and most beautiful woman I know inside and out and I was devastated to find out that she was sick. I immediately got her off of those bad chemically filled antiperspirants and gave her choices of all natural products, as well as the DIY deodorant I use! Slowly but surely we will get her back to being cancer free, but I had to make sure that was the first step!!
Quick side note! If you’re like me and sweat a lot, again we are being honest with each other lol, and you’re nervous your sweat is going to make you stink during this process of changing deodorants, you can do what I did and use Apple Cider Vinegar! Body odor occurs when bacteria on our skin breaks down the sweat into certain acids. Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing tool I use in a lot of home remedies! It helps fight bacteria all over the body. By using Apple Cider Vinegar for eliminating body odor, it helps maintain the pH balance of your skin*, basically it neutralizes the bacteria that causes the body odor problems.
- Choose diluted Apple Cider Vinegar and dip a cotton pad or clean cloth in the diluted Apple Cider Vinegar
- Use it to clean your underarms and allow it to dry for a few minutes
- You may smell like apple cider vinegar for a few minutes, but the smell goes away rather quickly
- Wash it off with an antibacterial soap
- Do this morning and night until you notice your sweat and smell levels are getting back to normal
I’ve never felt so confident about my underarms before (weird I know). Read up on the recipe below and give it a try!! If you love, let me know!
DIY Deodorant I use:
~ 5 tablespoons coconut oil
~ ¼ cup baking soda
~ ¼ cup cornstarch
~ 10 – 15 drops of your favorite essential oils
- I use Lavender, Grapefruit and Tree Tea Oil
Mix all ingredients together until creamy. Store in a glass container (during Summer months, I recommend keeping in the fridge during the day and take out right before going to bed). Apply a pea sized drop (or whatever you feel most comfortable with for your needs) to underarms daily. Wait 1 – 2 minutes before putting top on to let dry!
Have a refreshed and confident day!!
