My husband grew another year wiser (determined, older, grumpier … all of the above lol) this past weekend, and so of course we had to celebrate. If there is one thing my husband loves more than random facts and me, which that last one is debatable, it’s beer. He is somewhat of a connoisseur. With that in mind, our friends took us on this amazing beer tour, “LA Beer Hop” and we had the best time!!
You know what they say right, “Great minds drink alike”.
If you’re little in size like me, I suggest eating a big breakfast beforehand. We went to three different breweries: Iron Triangle, Mumford and Boomtown; all on the East & Central LA tour. LA Beer Hop is a husband + wife owned company and our lovely guide Cindy was not only sweet, but really knowledgeable about beer. She taught us the main ingredients that make up beer: Barley, Yeast, Hops and of course Water. She also explained the different types of barley, how hops work (flower from the plant Humulus lupulus) and what we should expect from different types of beer. For example, you would add hops to the mash (or mixture) as you’re going into the boiling stage. The longer you have them in that stage and the more you have, the more bitter tasting your beer is. Sometimes brewers will even add fresh hops right at the end of the brewing process just to add some aromatics to the beer.
We tried several beers, but my new favorite kinds are: Sour Beers, which has a Kombucha Flavor (acquired taste) and Nitro Beers. You guys, Nitro Beer changed my life; literally the smoothest beer I’ve ever had. Nitro is referring to the gas used in the carbonation process. Basically the more nitrogen bubbles you have in your beer and the less carbon dioxide bubbles you have, the creamier your beer will be. It was quite magical and I highly recommend. I think at every brewery we went to we got about 3 – 6 samples each. Cindy was nice enough to get us pizza delivered at our second location (Mumford) which was perfect to help soak up all the tipsy feels the beer was giving me and by the last location, Boomtown I was definitely feeling it. We had a few more drinks, played some games like shuffle board, which neither couple was good at and then went home.
If you ever find yourself in the Southern California area with nothing to do and like beer, this is for you! If you like to have a good time with friends, this is still for you! LA Beer Hop offers four different types of tours: East & Central LA where we go to a series of breweries in Downtown LA and Central LA. South Bay which has tours in Torrance, Redondo Beach and South Bay Area. Long Beach and Lakewood Area is the next tour offered. Lastly Private Tours in any of the three previously mentioned areas for groups of 6 or more.
Birthdays are my favorite holidays because you get to celebrate that special person all day!! I love doing fun and creative things and this was definitely an experience even I won’t forget. So thankful our friends introduced us to this and 100% recommend you trying it out as well.
So let’s all raise our ice cold beer mugs. I want to wish my amazing husband a very Happy Beerthday, you make my heart so hoppy…. I know, I’m crafty.
Ok I’m done with the puns, I promise!
